The Athletic’s Phil Hay has made a bold claim about Leeds’ end-of-season run-in following an unbeaten streak of five successive victories.
What’s he said?
United defeated local rivals Huddersfield Town 2-0 in the west Yorkshire derby on Saturday to regain control of the Championship throne with only nine games remaining.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have won five straight without conceding a goal, which is all that more impressive.
And Hay believes fringe man Tyler Roberts could continue to have an impact in the final few months of the season, even more so above January arrival, Jean-Kevin Augustin.
He tweeted:
Bamford back-up
It’s quite a damning statement to say given that the RB Leipzig loanee was brought in firstly, to replace Eddie Nketiah’s void in the squad and secondly, to provide back-up to Patrick Bamford.
However, Augustin has been limited to just 48 minutes from three appearances and hasn’t been involved since the win over Bristol City, which was five games ago.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old has had a bit-part role all season due to injury but has recently shown his exploits by netting a brace against Hull City, making it three goals in 14 appearances – averaging a goal every 164 minutes.
This is considerably less than what Bamford is even managing as he finds the net once per 225 minutes having bagged 13 goals in 38 matches, via Transfermarkt.
If Roberts continues to “tick the boxes” for Bielsa, then Augustin’s standing amongst the team is only going to decrease, and as a subsequent result, will only lower his chances of staying past the summer – you’d expect – with Leeds holding an option over him.
Call yourself a Leeds expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?
It says an awful lot when Hay claims the youngster can be “more crucial” than a player they’ve purposely gone out and brought in.
