Erik Lamela struggled to properly affect the game in the final third as Tottenham Hotspur drew 0-0 with Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
On the chalkboard
The Argentina international started the game as part of a front three alongside Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min but was a major reason for the club failing to find a way through against Nigel Pearson’s men.
He had 54 touches of the ball in total, per WhoScored, and managed six shots on goal, more than any other player on the pitch.
The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?
Only one, however, was on target, with three failing to trouble the goalkeeper and two being blocked, resulting in many disappointed punters who decided to use their Ladbrokes Promo Code 2020 on the match.
Lamela did register one key pass, while he completed just one dribble and was dribbled past on three occasions.
Lamela also failed to win an aerial duel or a tackle and was dispossessed on three occasions.
A wasteful display
This was a poor performance from Lamela.
While he could have won it at the death, attempting to stab the ball over the line only to be denied by goal-line technology, the 27-year-old all too regularly chose the wrong option.
His six shots outstripped the likes of both Son and Troy Deeney and two came from range, flying past Ben Foster’s goal.
Lamela is an excellent talent at his best and is regularly able to dictate the tempo and the press but he has struggled to properly stamp his authority on games this season.
Indeed, he has not scored in the Premier League since September, in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, and he last laid on an assist in August, in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City.
What possessed him to think that he would be able to become the match-winner at the drop of a hat is a stretch at best and he limited the threat of his own side with his inability to hit the back of the net.
Meanwhile, will Spurs miss a huge star if he departs?
